Q. I can't find the book I want on the shelf, what can I do?

If you can't find the item you're looking for on the shelves, here are a few things to consider:

Make sure that the location of the book matches where you are looking.

Each library has a Main Collection. The Thompson Library in Stoke also houses the Art Collection and has a Core Collection for books in high demand; often books which are on reading lists. There is also a media collection in Thompson and at the Health Library at Blackheath Lane.

When you find a book through the Library Search it will tell you which of the collections the book is located in.

The item may have been recently returned and is on its way back to the shelves. Check the re-shelving trolleys on the floor where the book should be. This is where books are brought to be re-shelved after they have been returned.

If the item still can't be found, please request a hold so that a search be made by our staff. Once the item is located, we can contact you via your student email and you can collect the book from our Reservation points
