Q. Why is there a word count?

The length of an academic essay varies depending on your level and subject of study, departmental guidelines, and specific course requirements.

The suggested word count doesn’t only tell you how long your essay should be – it also helps you work out how much information you can fit into the given space, and the level of detail required.

A word count also ensures fairness – every student has the same amount of words to show the person marking the work what they know.

Being able to keep within a word count requires a concise writing style and excellent communication skills – it helps you get straight to the point!
